Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in America, is a performer and actress. In music, film and television, Queen Latifah has received two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and nominations for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer and Rita instructor of Irvington High School. The couple split at the time Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah was raised in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic high school located in Newark New Jersey. Latifah refers to an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and gentle". The cousin she had bestowed it on her when she was eight. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on her high school basketball team. As part of a school production she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her career in beatboxing. Latifah was among the founding members of the version of the Flavor Unit which at that time was a crew composed of MCs and producers led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the track. He signed Latifah and dropped her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
